What is Sustainable Tourism & Why is Costa Rica so Popular with Eco-Conscious Travelers?

Are you planning your next vacation with a commitment to sustainable travel in mind? You're not alone. More and more travelers are choosing holiday destinations that reflect a responsible, environmentally friendly approach to tourism.

In fact, the term “sustainable tourism” is now a common feature in travel guides, and adventurers are on the hunt for greener ways to approach travel. If that sounds like you, which locations should you be pinning on your map to check out next?

In this blog, we'll explore why Costa Rica has become a popular hotspot for sustainable travelers and how its "pura vida" lifestyle is placing more of an emphasis on balance and environmental respect.

Firstly, What is Sustainable Tourism?

Before we discuss why Costa Rica is a prime destination for sustainable tourism, let's clarify what sustainable tourism actually is.

Sustainable tourism, also referred to as ‘responsible tourism’, aims to meet tourists' needs, while minimizing the negative impact on the environment and local communities.

The sustainable tourism sector is all about making
ethical choices as a traveler to ensure that your adventures do no harm to the destinations you're exploring.

Now, let’s move onto why exactly Costa Rica is so appealing to environmentally-conscious travelers and how it’s protecting its natural beauty.

1. Costa Rica Offers Rich Biodiversity

Costa Rica is a biodiversity paradise, home to a stunning array of plant and animal species. From vibrant toucans to rare insects, the country boasts some of the world's most vibrant and diverse ecosystems.

Since Costa Rica has become an increasingly popular tourist destination in recent years, local residents have made it their mission to help visitors understand the importance of preserving these species.

Here's how they’re doing it:

  • Targeted protection: Many of the country's national parks are now listed as protected areas, promoting the conservation of natural resources. While visitors are still welcome in many of Costa Rica’s national parks, there are strict guidelines about how to act throughout your visit.

  • Equal treatment: When visiting parks and other areas of natural beauty, tourists and locals alike are encouraged to respect these protected areas. With fair treatment for everyone wanting to witness Costa Rica’s beauty, Costa can minimize its ecological impact without discouraging tourists.

  • Community involvement: Local residents actively engage in conservation efforts, promoting a sense of community responsibility for preserving the diverse ecosystems and enhancing the overall impact of sustainable initiatives. From a young age, people living in Costa Rica are taught to love their surroundings, and they’re proud to share it with others.

2. Costa Rica Takes a Hands-On Approach to Sustainability Education

Costa Rica is unique in providing an enriching, hands-on approach to learning about nature and sustainability. For example, nature trails and attractions like the Royal Butterflies garden in Jaco tend to include educational tours, led by knowledgeable guides.

In addition to tours and on-site educational materials in visitor areas, Costa Rica’s country-wide dedication to sustainability education is also evident through its:

  • Ecotourism workshops: Costa Rica’s is known for hosting ecotourism workshops that aim to educate both locals and visitors about the importance and value of sustainable tourism practices.

  • Wildlife rehabilitation centers: In Costa Rica, there are many wildlife sanctuaries and rehabilitation centers to visit – or even to volunteer at. These facilities are usually non-profit organizations that depend on the kindness of donors and volunteers to run effectively.

  • Agrotourism initiatives: Agrotourism – or “agro-eco tourism” – is a type of tourism in Costa Rica that encourages visitors to engage in local agricultural production, and experience firsthand the joys of what Costa Rican farms and ranches have to offer. It also lends itself to the future economic and sustainable tourism development of these facilities, bringing a more diverse range of income from visitors.

  • Green certification programs: A certification for Sustainable Tourism (CST) has been developed in Costa Rica to help differentiate businesses based on how well they adopt a sustainable model of natural, cultural, and social resource management.

3. Sustainable Practices are Inspired by Costa Rica’s Natural Beauty

Costa Rica's breathtaking natural beauty has, for many visitors, inspired a natural connection with the environment. When people visit Costa Rica for the first time, it’s easy to recognize the importance of respecting the country’s natural and cultural resources, and encouraging others to do the same.

From educating first-time visitors on local produce to making tourist accommodation in Costa Rica more sustainable, locals have learned to embrace tourists, while promoting respect for the environment.

Here’s how Costa has built up a reputation for eco-friendly travel practices and established a more sustainable tourism sector:

  • Responsible tour operators: When booking a trip to Costa Rica, many reputable tour agents can offer advice on sustainable travel methods.

  • Eco-friendly accommodation: There are a wide variety of options when it comes to accommodation in Costa Rica, including lodgings that prioritize sustainability and incorporate eco-friendly features.

  • Carbon offset programs: Some tour agencies in Costa Rica will help travelers lower their carbon footprint by selling packages that contribute to reforestation or renewable energy projects.

  • Local artisan support: In Costa Rica, you’ll often find souvenirs and products from local artisans available for purchase. Buying these items instead of mass-produced goods and trinkets promotes sustainable practices and supports Costa Rican communities.

  • Leave-no-trace principles: When traveling around Costa Rica, you’ll notice signs that encourage a "Leave No Trace" approach to outdoor activities. This helps ensure that the natural environment remains undisturbed and wildlife is protected.

Fact:
Did you know that almost 100% of Costa Rica’s energy output in 2020 came from renewable sources like waterfalls and geothermal production? This represents a huge step forward for the sustainable development of Costa Rica.

4. Government Initiatives Play a Big Role in Conservation

Costa Rica's government plays an important role in promoting a culture of biodiversity and conservation.

When visiting Costa Rica, you'll notice the enthusiasm locals have for preserving wildlife, as well as their dedication to natural resources and sustainable living. This natural local enthusiasm is supported by government initiatives that incentivize the protection of the country's natural state.

Just some of the ways government funding and initiatives have helped Costa Rican locals embrace ecotourism include:

  • Conservation grants: In some Costa Rican communities, the government provides grants and financial support to local groups and organizations engaged in conservation projects, encouraging them to protect natural habitats and biodiversity.

  • Funded educational programs: Costa Rican authorities have invested in educational programs that raise awareness about the importance of environmental conservation. These programs inspire host communities to actively participate in preserving their natural surroundings.

  • Protected areas expansion: Government initiatives focus on expanding the network of protected areas and national parks, safeguarding ecosystems and providing habitats for wildlife.

Fact:
In 2017, the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) named the President of Costa Rica as Special Ambassador of the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development. This recognition highlighted just how much Costa Rica's environmental credentials are being noticed on a worldwide scale.

Jaco, Costa Rica Family

At Monico Upscale Condominiums we understand a Costa Rican experience is not just vacation, beaches, and luxury condo rentals it’s also getting to know the community that brings this beautiful area to life. We recently had our 10th annual company outing to give back to the community that has given so much to us and our clients. The day was full of laughter happiness and those special moments spent with people that make for lasting impressions and memories. The holidays are more than a time for a luxury vacation, we wanted to ensure that our community family had what they needed to celebrate with their relatives just as we are celebrating with ours. We passed out over 200 stockings filled with toys, candy, and school supplies to children in Jaco and surrounding areas. We understand that making memories doesn’t always happen on the beach, on vacation, or relaxing in luxury; sometimes it’s about kicking around a soccer ball with your friends. We were happy to contribute to these fun afternoons, promote outdoor experiences, and help the children of Jaco make memories by providing 80 soccer balls to the community. Sometimes it’s not just about fun, it’s about ensuring we have the necessities for our children, so we also passed out over 30 backpacks filled with stockings and blankets. We bring light to this event in order to highlight the wonderful community that has always been so giving to us, and the satisfaction we get from giving back in some small way. We encourage everyone to embrace this holiday season by doing something, even if it’s small, for others. Give to your global community, give to your local community, give to your family, then give to yourself with a nice cold one on some warm sand. We wish everyone a happy holiday season.
